Differences to Texas Hold’em
The key distinction between Omaha poker and Texas Hold’em lies in the number of “hole” cards dealt to each player at the start of the hand. Hold’em players receive two-hole cards; in Omaha, everyone gets dealt four cards. This makes it much easier for players to form high-ranking hands like full houses, so if you’re going to put a lot of chips into the pot, make sure you’ve got a big hand or a monster draw yourself – preferably the “nut” made hand or nut draw with the highest cards possible.
Another important difference in Omaha is that you must use exactly two of your hole cards to form your 5-card poker hand. In Hold’em, you can use one, both, or none of your hole cards; if you’re just starting out in Omaha, make sure you understand this rule before playing, so you don’t get confused thinking you have, say, an Ace-high Spade flush when the only Spade in your hole cards is the Ace of Spades.
Omaha Poker Betting Limits
There are several different variations of Omaha poker at Ignition, each with its own rules and recommended strategies. In this section, we cover the three basic betting structures used to play Omaha, which are also used to play Hold’em and all the other poker variants on our menu.
Pot-Limit Omaha
In Pot-Limit Omaha, players can only bet or raise an amount up to the current size of the pot. This betting limit is ideal for Omaha, giving you some measure of pot control without sacrificing the thrills of “big bet” poker.
No-Limit Omaha
No-Limit Omaha uses the same unrestricted betting structure as No-Limit Texas Hold’em. Aside from rare exceptions, players can bet any amount of chips in their stack at any time; this variant rewards sharp decision-making and the ability to anticipate your opponents’ moves.
Fixed-Limit Omaha
Also known as “Limit Omaha” for short, Fixed-Limit Omaha forces players to bet or raise in fixed increments: either the “small bet” preflop and on the flop, or the “big bet” on the turn and river. This creates a more methodical game with less variance compared to its No-Limit counterpart, making Fixed-Limit the preferred betting structure for most players at the Omaha Hi/Lo tables.
Tournaments vs. Cash Games
Ignition Poker has both Omaha cash tables and tournaments on our menu, giving you even more options when you’re ready to hit the tables. Both game types are played almost the same way as their Hold’em cousins, although in Omaha tournaments, you usually won’t see any antes introduced as the blind levels go up – there’s already more than enough action when you get four-hole cards instead of two.
Omaha Strategy
Omaha may have virtually the same rules as Texas Hold’em, but those four-hole cards make a world of difference. A hand like Two Pair is often worth betting all three streets in Hold’em; in Omaha, you might want to check every street instead, and hope you either improve or get to showdown.
You also have way more “starting” hands in Omaha than you do in Hold’em. Memorizing exact preflop strategies won’t get you very far in Omaha – there are simply too many possible combinations to consider, like double-suited one-gappers (Ks Qh Js 9h) and single-suited double pairs (Ah Ad Qh Qc).
